Five routine maintenance steps for compact loaders
Source: Hamac Machinery
As one of the smallest motorized equipment on the equipment market, compact loaders are specifically designed to run a large number of different tools - hydraulic and non-hydraulic attachments such as buckets, breakers, brooms, shovels, backhoes and scrapers.
On almost all construction sites you will see compact tool carts (also known as compact loaders). This equipment is popular because of its versatility and maneuverability to reach even areas that are difficult to reach with other machinery. Productive equipment like CTCs are a necessity for productive workplaces, so having a comprehensive preventive maintenance program is essential to keep them running at peak performance.
Five basic steps for routine maintenance of a compact loader
Cosmetic inspection: The eyes and ears are probably the best tools, so use them by searching the CTC for signs of damage, noise, rattling or wear. Start by checking the tracks or wheels, nuts, bolts, body, controls, guards and all attachments. Look for hydraulic fittings, worn hoses and leaks around fuel hoses. Check for battery corrosion on the terminals or any loose or frayed wires. If the battery terminals need to be cleaned, remove the negative terminal first and then reinstall. Check tire pressure or track tension. Check belts and replace any worn or cracked belts.
Maintain hydraulic fluid level: Most operators know to check engine oil and coolant, but it is also important to make sure the hydraulic fluid level is at the proper level. If necessary, drain it to the top while being careful not to overfill it. If the hydraulic fluid is milky white, there is water in the system. The hydraulic fluid needs to be changed immediately because as the machine heats up, the water in the system will turn to steam, which can severely damage the pump and wheel motor.
Clean the filter: Restricted air flow can reduce performance and lead to engine damage, so the air filter needs to be checked and replaced regularly. It consists of a container, an indicator and a main filter. Some air filter systems are equipped with a service indicator on the outside of the canister. The service indicator is the first indication of the condition of the air filter. If the filter is restricted, the internal indicator will prevent a clear viewing window. Be sure to clean the pre-filter or main air filter before opening the exterior to inspect or service it. To meet recent EPA standards, many engine systems now have a component called a carbon canister that collects fumes from the fuel system. The carbon canister has a life span if it is subjected to dust, dirt, or filled with fuel. If the hydraulic filter needs to be changed every 200 hours or if the hydraulic fluid is contaminated. It is recommended that when replacing the hydraulic or any filter, use the OEM filter to ensure proper installation and compliance with OEM specifications.
Properly lubricate and tighten connections: Many problems can occur simply because of loose parts. A simple inspection by visual inspection and touching the object to check for looseness or damage, and tightening with a wrench before using the CTC Compact Tool Bracket will reduce wear and extend the life of machine components. Before entering the field, lubricate all pivot points and tighten all nuts and bolts.
Safety Check: Make sure the parking brake is engaged (if applicable) and the traction control lever is returned to neutral. Also, make sure the auxiliary hydraulics are disconnected, as many compact tool holders will not start the engine if the traction control and/or auxiliary hydraulics are not in the neutral position.
Preventive maintenance is not a chore, it is an investment. The little time it takes to maintain your CTC will save you a lot of time, money and major repair work. You will also save more time using the equipment without having to replace it as often.
